Frozen Treats

Happy August!
For the past couple of weeks I have been on an ice-cream kick.  I have been making my own ice-cream with my children it is so good and FUN.  Ice-cream and frozen yogurt doesn't have to be "unhealthy".  It is important to look for healthy substitutions and replacements for the recipes ingredients (this goes for any recipe).  For example, today I decided to substitute the "heavy" cream for "light" cream and the 2% milk in place of whole milk. Please note you can also use soy milk in place of regular milk.  With these substitutions the consistency of the ice-cream may seem too liquidity (put the ice-cream in the freezer before serving for at least 3 to 4 hours).  You can also add fresh fruit such as bananas and strawberries into the ice-cream or as a topping.  When you make your own ice-cream you are in control of the ingredients.  One other thing that I have also been doing is, making my children ice-pops.  I utilize fruit juices such as apple, orange, grape, and pineapple.  I pour the juice into ice-pop molds that come with ice-pop holders.   This is a great snack on a hot day.

Recipe Tips for "Low Fat" Frozen Yogurt
  • Replace heavy and or light cream with a mix of regular yogurt and Greek yogurt.  Greek yogurt is a great substitute as it is low-fat and high in protein.
  • Use honey instead of sugar or as a partial substitution.  For example, if the recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, use 1/2 cup and a couple tablespoons of honey.
  • Add chunks of fresh fruit (yummmm).

Tip:  Always search for healthy replacements to a recipes ingredients. Replacing ingredients reduces calories, fat, sugar, etc.  Today I made cookies n' cream ice-cream and I used low-fat cookies.  BE CREATIVE.

Let me know when and if you make ice-cream and/or frozen yogurt.... and how yummy it was ?!?

What is your favorite flavor?  My favorite flavor(s) are chocolate chip mint and chocolate with peanut butter.
