Boost Your Immune System
"If it's going to come, it's going to come. You can't even cure the common cold. Why worry about it?" ~ Joe Ortiz
Boost Your Immune System
With cold and flu season upon us let's discuss how to keep our immune system strong and healthy. I had the flu once, and once is enough. It shuts you down for at least seven days. I believe in yearly flu shots for me and my children. The children can even get the flu mist rather than a shot.
Can you cure the common cold? No. Can you magically prevent yourself from the flu? Maybe. But you can take measures to help your immune system become strong. I hate colds and I hate the flu even more. Fortunately, I rarely get colds. There are various foods and supplements that can help with flu/cold prevention.
Eat lots of yogurt ~ I have been buying Dannon's Actvia for the probiotics. Yogurt is also a good source of protein. It is also helpful because of it's good bacteria. Just be sure to check the label. Sometimes yogurt contains too much sugar. Another one of my favorite yogurts is Greek yogurt - low sugar, very high in protein.
Drink Green-tea ~ It is filled with healthy antioxidants. Honestly, I am not a fan of green-tea but I drink it once in awhile. Anything to help maintain a healthy immune system. Green-tea is said to contain a cancer fighting antioxidant.
Eat lots of fruits and veggies ~ Chitale (2008) emphasizes, "Overall, maintaining a diverse diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, is the body's best defense against viral invaders" (abc.com). Broccoli is a great choice :). Like green-tea, broccoli also has a lot of cancer fighting power.
Keep Airborne on-hand ~ When I feel a cold approaching. I try to take Airborne twice per day. It is filled with tons of healthy vitamins and although I was once against it, I feel otherwise now. They say, "Don't knock it until you try it".
Take daily supplements ~ I take Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Lysine, and Vitamin D. I much rather take supplements versus medication for a horrible cold. Each vitamin has different benefits, overall they all help in boosting your defenses.
I almost forgot, EXERCISE, also helps with maintaining a healthy immunity....it reduces stress.

Get a flu shot, it is a myth that it gives you the flu! It will not prevent a cold but you will not get the flu :).
