Sugar In Disguise

Sugar is often disguised under different names.  I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to read the labels on the food that you choose to eat.  Some foods have items that sound like dangerous chemicals.  Know what you are eating!  I am not one to obsess over food labels, however, know what is healthy and what is not.  Let's talk SUGAR!

 
I thought sugar was just plain sugar.  Sugar comes in many various forms.  As we have been discussing since the nutrition video, the first ingredient is what the item contains the most of.  If sugar is the first ingredient many would re-consider purchasing it. 

Some tips  from Women's Health were to avoid junk food "in disguise" and processed food.  Women's Health mentioned that the following foods pose as "in-disguise" junk food, "low-fat" salad dressing, breakfast cereals, and vitamin drinks. Hidden SUGARS!  Sugars cause disease and turn to fat.

Names to be aware of and avoid.  The following list was displayed on the Prevention's Website. 

All types of Corn Syrup (high fructose, etc). 
Sucrose
Fructose
Dextrose
Galactose
Lactose
Maltose
Invert Sugar
Raw Sugar
Turbinado sugar
Brown sugar
Confectioner's sugar
Granulated sugar
Honey
Maple Sugar
Molasses

I was utterly surprised at how many different names sugar is disguised as.  I mean I have heard of some of the common ones such as brown sugar, honey, etc.  But 15 diverse names?  In a future post I will define each one.
