5 Lifestyle Changes For A Healthier Mouth

When it comes to making sure you have healthy teeth, a few lifestyle adjustments make all the difference. Obviously, we all know the importance of brushing and flossing, but there are a range of other things you can do to improve your oral hygiene.



Here are just a few adjustments you can make to improve the overall health of your teeth and mouth.

Reduce Sugar in Your Diet

Too much sugar is a common cause of tooth decay, so reducing the amount in your diet will help protect your teeth. Simply cutting back the number of high sugar snacks such as cakes, sweets and soft drinks that you consume will make a huge difference. As well as this, eating too much sugar can cause weight gain, increasing the risk of heart conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Make sure to check the back of packaging before you eat something, as many types of food have more added sugar than you would think.

Stick to One Glass of Fruit Juice or Smoothie Per Day



High quantities of sugar naturally occur in fruit and milk, but you don’t necessarily have to cut back on these directly. However, when the fruit is juiced or the milk is blended, sugars are released from the structures. If you are going to have one of these types of drink, it’s best to have it at mealtime. It has been recommended that you don’t have more than 150ml of fruit juice a day so you don’t cause too much damage to your teeth.

Quit Smoking

This may seem like an obvious one that causes negative effects all over your body, but you should quit smoking for the good of your oral hygiene as well. Just some of the problems of smoking include staining your teeth yellow, causing bad breath and increasing your risk of gum disease. If you decide to quit smoking, you should notice a pretty big difference fairly quickly.  

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Another common culprit when it comes to causing health issues, alcohol intake should also be restricted to protect your teeth. Alcohol can end up eroding the outer surface of your teeth, which can in turn lead to a loss of enamel. You may well end up having to go to the dentist for fillings or dental implants. Alcohol can also increase your risk of developing mouth cancer. It’s estimated that people who smoke and drink are 38 times more likely to develop this type of cancer than those who do neither.

Staining Food and Drink

Certain types of food and drink can stain your teeth, causing you to need a professional clean or whitening service. Red wine, cigarette smoke, tea and coffee are all common causes. Reduce your intake of these substances and your teeth should end up looking whiter and healthier.

When it comes to oral hygiene, prevention in far better than the cure so making a few lifestyle changes can really make all the difference.
