When diagnosed with a serious illness or disease, people have to figure out their best course of treatment that can help them lead a normal life and feel a lot more comfortable. However, some people also spend time considering whether or not to tell their friends and family. Of course, most inform their immediate family, but whether they tell anyone else can often take some careful consideration.

There are various pros and reasons why someone may want to hide their illness. But do the cons outweigh them? In this blog post, we’ll weigh up the pros and cons to help you decide.

Pro: You Don’t Want To Burden Others

When you announce to others that you are ill, they might feel obliged to care for you and help you with certain things. However, you might feel like you are a burden to them if they carry out things like this. That doesn’t have to happen if you hide your illness, though - as no one will know that you are sick, they won’t want to do everything they can to help you.

Cons: People Might Not Know That You Now Have Limitations

Some illnesses might significantly reduce your energy, and you may not be able to do all the usual hobbies and pastimes that you once did. You might also not be able to continue drinking or eating certain foods. If you do not let people know that you are ill, there is no way that they will understand why you have to change your lifestyle to incorporate these limitations.

Pros: You Won’t Be Stigmatized

Some illnesses come with a stigma attached to them. This is usually because the general public has attached untrue stereotypes to the specific illness, which has caused it to develop a bad reputation. If you keep your illness a secret from others, you won’t be putting yourself up for judgment.

Cons: The Illness Might Be Very Visible

Sometimes, diseases and illnesses can manifest themselves visibly, which could make it very difficult to hide from others. However, you will be able to take some steps to try and reduce the visibility. For instance, if you are suffering from breast cancer you might be able to hide the effects of a mastectomy with mastectomy bras, and any rashes that illness causes can be covered up with makeup. However, it’s worth reminding yourself that you might not be able to completely cover any illness.

Pro: You Can Get On With A Normal Life

As no one knows about your illness, no one will be bothering you about it so you will be able to lead a relatively normal life. No one will make a fuss over you or continually ask you how you are getting on. For most people, leading a normal life can help the whole healing process!

As you can see, there is a lot to think about before you decide to keep an illness secret. Just remember that you always put yourself first when you make a decision.
