We are all guilty of it. Trying to fit too much into your days whether it's work, spending time with loved ones, going to the gym, or even just relaxing. But what is the consequence of this? Well, usually is that we end up having half an hour here and an hour there off of our sleep time. Something that might not seem a lot in the short term, but over a week or two can seriously affect the amount of sleep that we are getting. How much sleep do we need?

The amount of sleep that we need will vary from person to person. It's usually from around 7-9 hours a night, every night. Unfortunately, modern life means that we can stay up later without any issues. Making it super easy to not get enough.

Add on top, that when your body is working hard, as it does when exercising, it produces a higher level of a chemical called adenosine. This will trigger your body to want more sleep than usual. Meaning the harder you work, the more sleep you will need.

In fact, it's a two-way process because as you work harder, you will want more rest time for your body to clear the adenosine and the muscles to repair. But also sleeping more can help you to facilitate that hard work.

Ways of getting more sleep

With that in mind, what can you do to ensure that you are getting enough shut-eye to perform at your best?

Bed

Well, look at the physical side of things first. Is your bed as comfortable as it could be? Have you got the right mattress firmness, the right sheets, have you got enough space?

It's important to look at all these things as being uncomfortable in the night can cause you to wake up a lot, interrupting your sleep.

Another option is to go for a sleep aid. These come in all sorts of forms such as supplements, prescription, and nonprescription medications that you can take to help you drift off to sleep and stay asleep through the night.
