How Easy Is It to Succumb to Addiction?

Everyone talks about addiction and how it's difficult to get out of, but rarely do we discuss just how easy it is to actually succumb to an addiction. As you may know, addiction can be a horrible condition that takes over our lives and ruins our relationships with those around us. It can get us into debt, it can cause havoc to our health and it can even make us lose sight of our goals in life.

That’s why we feel it’s important to discuss just how easy it can be to become addicted to something.


What is addiction?

First, let’s look at what addiction actually is.

Addiction is often defined as having no control over taking or doing something. It’s not just a sudden impulse either, but something that happens incredibly often and to the point that it can start to harm you. This is where most people mistake an addiction for something like having a passion. While there is a thin line between enjoying something and becoming addicted to it, it’s important to take note of the differences.

Types of addiction that are easy to develop

Here are a few examples of addiction and why they’re so easy to fall into:

  • Addiction to the internet - One of the lesser-known addictions in the world is internet addiction. This is often caused when someone is alienated from society due to several different reasons. It could be because they have low self-esteem or it could be because they’re bound at home and unable to seek social interaction outside. People that spend hours on their phones and computers doing everything from gaming to chatting are usually susceptible to internet addiction, especially if it starts to make their health decline.
  • Addiction to solvents - Volatile substance abuse is the inhalation of solvents like glue, aerosols and lighter fuel. It gives you a quick jolt that makes you feel like you’re intoxicated, hence why many people resort to it as an alternative and a quick fix to something like drugs.
  • Addiction to work - Work addictions are also problematic. When people become obsessed with their work, it’s usually because they want to feel like they’re making use of their life, that they’re doing their part to provide for their family and that they’re progressing their careers. Sadly, many people work themselves too hard and eventually becoming physically tired. If you find that you never give yourself a day off, then it’s important to take a break so that you don’t succumb to the addiction and end up hurting yourself.
  • Addiction to gambling - One of the most common forms of addiction. The high someone gets when they make a big win is intoxicating and thrilling, and many people seek to replicate that excitement on a regular basis. Sadly, the odds are always stacked against you and you’ll end up losing in the long run. However, gambling in a casino isn’t the only issue. Gambling addictions can also be a part of video gaming culture, especially with new “loot box” microtransactions around that give players a low percent chance to win special rewards.
  • Addiction to drugs - Another common addiction. Drug addictions can develop due to a number of different factors. Thankfully, there is plenty of help available and many different sources to get assistance. Is medical detox for addiction treatment the right option? To some it is and there is plenty of information to help back this up, but there are also rehabilitation clinics and other ways to get off this addiction as long as you’re willing to put in the effort and understand the consequences of sticking with it.

Preventing addictions from developing

The first major defense you have against addiction is to prevent them from developing in the first place. This can be difficult to do depending on your circumstances, but here are a couple of tips:

  • Resist temptation from social pressure. Stay away from people that try to get you involved in their addiction.
  • Boost your self-esteem so you don’t need to rely on addiction
  • Work on managing your stress and anxiety levels
  • Realize when you’re hurting your own body
  • Book a session with a therapist to help you understand your problems
  • Look for support groups to assist you and surround yourself with positivity
  • Choose your friends wisely. Don’t hang around “friends” that tempt you with addiction that could ruin your life
