Despite the fact that remaining fit and healthy is hugely important to the wellbeing of each and every one of us, we’re all guilty of neglecting our bodies needs at times. Some of us are more into sports than others and there are those who don’t even bother getting off the couch unless it’s to get to work or into the kitchen.

It’s so so important to be getting daily exercise as your body needs to be active regularly for it to work at its best. But many don’t bother because they feel that the gym isn’t for them. Well, guess what? Absolutely no one has any excuse to not be exercising because there is so much variety out there that it’s impossible not to find something you enjoy or can at least tolerate.

If you’re wanting to get fit but wondering what you can do that you will enjoy as well as breaking a sweat, here are some alternatives to hitting the gym.

1. Get your hike on

Exercise doesn’t have to be a solo thing if you don’t want it to be. You can get a group of friends together, of all varying fitness levels and go on a hike. It will be amazing for various reasons - the exercise for one, but also for the views and great conversation you’ll have with some of your closest friends. You’ll be improving your friendships as well as your fitness levels through powerful cardio and it helps reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure too!

2. Dancing

There are more types of dancing you can choose from that you could even discover. You don’t have to be into fast-paced dancing like Zumba or hip-hop. You can give your body a great work out by learning ballet or ballroom. It’s all about experimenting and finding out what works for you. Dancing is also fantastic because it improves mental health, improves general happiness and leads to better stamina, strength and higher self-esteem.

3. Cycling

Cycling is one of the best cardiovascular exercises out there. It’s one of the best ways to improve your fitness and takes the brunt of exercise away from your joints when compared to running. The great thing about riding a bike is that you can get out and about to see nature at it’s finest and you can get from A to B as well. If you can’t drive or you’re looking to save on petrol then this form of exercise is perfect for you. You can even get yourself involved in an amazing project like cycling for charity.

4. Martial arts

Who hasn’t watched Karate Kid and wanted to be Mr. Miyagi at one point? There’s something totally awesome about being able to exert complete control over your body and who wouldn’t want to know they can defend themselves if they really needed to? Martial arts is great because it’s a total body workout that will improve your cardio health, aid in weight loss, adds muscle tone and better your mood.
