No matter what age we are, we try to steer clear of stress. As well as causing emotional problems, it can lead to various health issues. And, these only worsen as we age. In fact, stress over 50 can cause:

  • Weight gain
  • Weakened immune system
  • Hypertension
  • Risk of stroke
  • Risk of heart attack

Need we go on? When we’re young, we think of retirement as the time we’ll finally be able to kick back. But, that’s rarely the reality. The aging process is stressful. Health issues, money worries, and fear of the future can leave us more stressed than ever. And, when that happens, it can have a detrimental impact on every aspect of our lives.

The good news is, it’s never too late to take control. And, the following pointers could be what you need to sort your stress.

Tackle those tricky medical bills

Both health and finances can cause stress for seniors. So, tackle two birds with one stone here. The chances are that you’re visiting a doctor more than ever before. But, you can hardly afford to pay out extra on medical bills from your pension. So, it’s past time you found an insurance policy or Medicare plan which dealt with the issue for you. This will involve monthly payouts, but you can guarantee it’ll be cheaper than you’d pay otherwise. Plus, you can compare plans if you visit and other sites like them. Taking time over your decision this way will ensure you get the best deal possible. Then, you can trust the doctor to relieve your health concerns without adding to your money worries.

A new way to exercise

Exercise is a fantastic way to bust stress. A good workout releases endorphins which keep our worries at bay. Obviously, you won’t fancy heading out for a jog anymore. But, that’s not to say that working out has to be off the cards for you. If you’re still fairly able-bodied, sites like have some amazing exercises to try. If you don’t feel you could manage these, take a walk around the block each day, or do some gentle yoga. Anything to get your body moving will help keep some of those worries away.

Get into the habit of napping

The majority of us feel more stressed when we’re tried. It’s no wonder when you consider how much extra strain this puts on our bodies and minds. If we haven’t slept enough, we feel unable to cope with even simple tasks. As your body ages, the way you sleep is sure to change. You may find it more difficult to sleep soundly at night, thus making you more tired during the day. Or, you may find that you feel tired faster. That’s completely normal, and you can tackle the stress caused by getting into the habit of napping. Just ten minutes when you feel your stress levels rising could make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to give it a go.
